I’m a huge fan of Seiko. Who isn’t at Fratello you might ask. Furthermore, I’m not against a bit of brand bias — of giving my tried-and-tested favorites a lot of rope. And whenever Seiko releases a new watch I always sit up and pay attention unless…it is one of the Astron releases. And it’s not because they aren’t my favored mechanical marvels. A stunning movement, both technical and visually
It must have been devastating to find out the watch was a put-together — a “Frankenstein” watch. It was the four-line Submariner that featured a chronometer certified movement. Only the best will do for 007. Both versions are now serious collectors' items. How serious is it? Prices for good pieces that are mostly sold at auction start under 100k and quickly rise to several hundred thousand dollars. What is your favorite? The four-line Bond version is my favorite. At these prices, this choice is rather unnecessary. The prices are one reason, but I also would not say no to the two-line version pictured.
The Tourbillon, however, is the star of the show. It's a real beauty. Frederique Constant is known for its in-house calibre design and development. The tourbillon FC-980 that powers this piece may be the Maison's flagship movement. The dial side bridge and the brushed and polished components are both well finished, as are all the other components.
Ball has taken a workhorse, adjusted it to COSC certification and protected it from magnetism with a smart, shiny case, screw down crown and bracelet combination that is waterproof to 100 meters. The ETA 2824-2 is not as impressive as the other calibers in this list, but the Engineer III Marvelight's GADA status can be attributed to its ease of serviceability almost anywhere on the planet. Ball's elegant, robust case is a great way to get ETA reliability and ease in a Ball watch for $2,350.
